FAQ

Specific Questions

Where are Kid Basix products made?
We are an American company however our products are manufactured in China. We have done everything to ensure our factories, worker conditions and products are up to our standards. To do so, we visit our factories frequently. The factories are very clean, orderly and humane. Most importantly, they are ISO (International Standards of Operation) certified which is very difficult to attain and comes from an outside agency that audits for manufacturing processes and standards. Finally, we have the independent testing lab, STR, test all elements of our products from the steel and plastic compounds, to FDA and European child safety standards, to the durability of the stainless steel body - just to make sure.
Are The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ and The Safe Sporter™ dishwasher safe?
All of our products and their parts are dishwasher safe. We recommend placing them in the top rack. We also recommend that any small detachable parts like the Sippy valve or Starter nipple are hand washed separately. While the valve and nipples do well in the dishwasher, they are small and easy to lose. Please allow all the washed parts to dry completely before reassembling the cup.
Is the The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ and The Safe Sporter™ insulated?
No. Our products are single-walled stainless steel to keep them light and maximize volume . However, the outer sleeve on the Starter and Sippy do provide some insulating protection when you put warm or cold beverages in your bottle or cup.
Can I microwave The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ or The Safe Sporter™ to warm the beverage?
No. Metal objects and microwaves don't mix. Bad things happen.
Is the stainless steel lined with any other material in The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ or The Safe Sporter™?
No. There is no need; it is pure stainless steel inside and out.
What number plastic is used on The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ and The Safe Sporter™?
Any plastic used in any of our products is #5 plastic or polypropylene which is the safest and most stable of all plastics. All plastics used are tested free of BPA and phthalates.
Does the stainless steel in Kid Basix drink ware have nickel in it?
We use food grade stainless steel (300 series or 18/8) in all of our products, which has a maximum of 8% nickel. It is the presence of nickel that results in the formation of the molecular structure that gives this grade some of its key characteristics such as high strength, ductility (ability to be formed) and toughness. It is our understanding that all stainless steel has some nickel in it and it does not pose a health threat. However, there is a small percentage of the population that has a nickel allergy in which case they should stay away from all stainless steel as it may cause a skin rash.
Do the protective sleeves on The Safe Starter™, The Safe Sippy™ or The Safe Sporter™ contain latex?
No. None of our products contain latex. The protective sleeve on The Safe Starter is made of silicone and the sleeves on The Safe Sippy™ and The Safe Sporter™ are made from TPR or Thermoplastic Rubber that does not contain latex.
Is that a rust spot I see on my Safe Starter™, Safe Sippy™ or Safe Sporter™?
Stainless steel is naturally highly resistant to corrosion and stains. It's also just a beautiful material (as you can tell we're a bit biased). With frequent use, small spots of rust may show up. This doesn't mean that your cup will shortly turn into a flaking pile of rust or that you child will be ingesting some nasty chemicals (it's actually a viable source of iron). In rare instances larger amounts of rust may occur, in that case please contact us at info@kid-basix.com.

Specific Product Questions for The Safe Starter™

Are replacement nipples available for The Safe Starter™ baby bottle?
The Safe Starter™ bottle has three different nipple flows available (sold separately): #1(slow) recommended for 0-3months and breastfeeding babies; #2 (medium) recommended for 3-6months; and #3(fast) recommended for 6months+. Please see your retailer for replacement nipple packs. If you are having trouble finding them, please contact us at info@kid-basix.com .
If I can’t microwave The Safe Starter™ baby bottle, how do I warm it?
Your Safe Starter™ can be warmed in a bottle warmer or a pan of warm water. Neither will damage the silicone skin. Make sure to thoroughly dry base of bottle before use. Note: Always check the food temperature before feeding. Do not warm liquid beyond body temperature of 98.6°F(37°C). Stainless steel is an excellent conductor of heat and cold. Your Safe Starter™ may require less heating time than a typical plastic or glass bottle.
How can I check how much baby has eaten if I can’t see through the stainless steel?
The silicone skin has volume markings to help measure how much food your baby has already taken in. If you need a more precise measurement at the end of feeding, use the travel cap with volume markings to pour out remaining fluid and measure.
Does the silicone sleeve need to be removed with each washing?
We recommend that you clean the bottle and all components (including the silicone sleeve) separately after each use. All parts are dishwasher safe. We recommend top rack only. While the smaller parts such as the nipple and sealer disc do well in the dishwasher, they are small and easy to lose and we recommend hand washing. Please allow all the washed parts to dry completely before reassembling the bottle.
How do I get the sleeve back on now that I have taken off?
Turn the sleeve inside out and place the bottom of the sleeve up against the bottom of the stainless steel bottle. Push up on the sleeve and the roll it back onto the bottle by turning it right side out. Note: The Sleeve will fit more snuggly if the volume markings and The Safe Starter logo are on the smooth (not indented) surfaces.

Specific Product Questions for The Safe Sippy™ and The Safe Sippy2™:

Do I need to remove the sleeve every time I wash the cup?
No. The sleeve does fine staying on in the dishwasher and with hand washing. We recommend from time to time taking it off to clean so no gunky stuff gets inside. We recommend allowing the sleeve to dry completely before reapplying to the cup.
How do I get the sleeve back on now that I have taken off?
Turn the sleeve inside out and place the bottom of the sleeve up against the bottom of the stainless steel cup. Push up on the sleeve and the roll it back onto the cup by turning it right side out.
Water drips from the spout, is there something wrong with my cup?
No. The valve is designed to prevent big spills. A few drips may come out when the cup is turned upside down. Making it completely drip-proof would also make it difficult for a child to drink from. If the dripping seems excessive, please contact us at info@kid-basix.com.
I just purchase The Safe Sippy 2™. It looks like I got three valves in the cup – one clear, one translucent orange and one opaque orange in color. Can I use them interchangeably?
While they look similar, the three pieces have very different functions. The Safe Sippy 2™ lets you use the cup as both a sippy cup and a straw cup. With the clear valve in place, you’ve got a sippy cup. When you’re looking to use the cup as a straw cup, you’ll want to use the light orange valve with the flat end of the straw inserted in the light orange valve. The deep opaque orange valve is a travel plug. If you want to throw your Sippy2 in your travel bag and prevent any leaks, remove the straw adaptor or valve and replace with the travel plug.
My gasket/o-ring fell out of the cap. How do I get it back in?
The Gasket/O-Ring is the small rubbery translucent ring that fits inside the cap and seals the cap and cup to prevent leaking. It is removable for cleaning purposes and can be a little tricky to get back in place. When looking at the o-ring in profile, you’ll notice the “top” side is wider while the “bottom” side (which faces into the groove of the lid” is tapered. The top flat side is what seals the lid to the stainless body. When it is in securely, it should lay flat and stay in position. If you are having trouble with the gasket, feel free to e-mail us at info@kid-basix.com.
Can I buy a spare lid for The Safe Sippy™ cup?
Yes. Spare lids may be purchased from Safe & Secure Baby. You will find this retailer online at www.safeandsecurebaby.com.
Help! I’m looking for spare parts (valve, gasket/o-ring, straw and straw adaptor, travel plug or dust cap) for my Safe Sippy or Safe Sippy2. Where can I find them?
Valve + Gasket Replacement Packs (available now) and Straw Adaptor+ Travel Plug + Dust Cap Replacement Packs (available Fall 2009) are available at a variety of retailers online and in store. If you are unable to find a retailer near you who offers these please email us at info@kid-basix.com and we’ll be happy to assist you further.
I already own The Safe Sippy™. How can I get all the new features of The Safe Sippy 2™?
We’ll help you wave your magic wand. Later this year you’ll find a Sippy 2 replacement pack acts as a conversion kit featuring a travel cap, travel plug and straw adapter. We hope this flexibility will let your child remain a fan in the years ahead.
Can I put hot beverages in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
Please don't. The Safe Sippy™ is made of food grade stainless steel. Since metal is a good conductor of hot (and cold), putting hot liquids into The Safe Sippy™ may cause burns. (We know we don't need to tell you this, but our lawyers made us.)
Can I put carbonated beverage in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
Please don't. Carbonated liquids have lots of bubbles that may cause your cups to leak. (The ones with sugar can also turn your 2 year old into a screaming banshee.)
Can I put pulpy juices in The Safe Sippy™ cup?
We recommend you don't. Pulp can clog your no-spill valve, preventing a child from being able to draw liquid out and may cause spontaneous wailing.

Specific Product Questions for The Safe Sporter™:

Do I need to remove the waistband/sleeve when I wash the cup?
No. The waistband does fine staying on in the dishwasher or with hand washing. We recommend from time to time that you roll it down to clean underneath the waistband so no gunky stuff builds up. You can remove it completely, but it has a very tight fit and is difficult to get back on.

My gasket/o-ring fell out of the lid. How do I get it back in?
The Gasket/O-Ring is the rubbery translucent ring that fits inside the lid and seals the lid and cup to prevent leaking. If it falls out in while washing, simply place it over the channel inside the lid and press fit it into place. If you are having trouble with the gasket, feel free to e-mail us at info@kid-basix.com.
